Venum has upgraded its contender gi to its second iteration improving upon its already widely popular and successful gi. It features stronger reinforced seams and stitching, improved eva foam collar, while maintaining its minimalist light weight design. With all the improvements you would think the price tag would also increase, but no it has maintained its great price point starting at $89.99. It is our opinion one of the most affordable intro BJJ gi from an experience and reliable brand that is Venum.
Features of the gi:
- Lightweight 350 GSM Pearl Weave Jacket
- Lightweight 250 GSM ,100% cotton pants
- Improved EVA Foam Collar (now more tougher to grab)
- Reinforced seams all around
- Embroidered logo on left chest and back
- Pre-Shrunk Cotton
Overall Sizing of the Contender Gi?The Venum contender gi has a slim fit design it is less bulk than other brands.
How to choose your size?Venum provides an estimated sizing guide:
What is pre-shrunk cotton? Before manufacturing the cotton used to make the gi is washed and dried to reduce shrinkage. A useful tip, even though it says pre-shrunk doesn't
mean it won't shrink. All gi tend to shrink pre-shrunk gis shrink a little less. From experience we would estimate it to be between .5 inch to 1 inch.
To avoid excess shrinkage wash gi and let air dry. Drying machines tend to shrink the gis more.
What is GSM?GSM is an acronym for (Grams per Square Meter), it is an indication on the thickness and weight of the gi. The lower the number the thinner and
lighter, larger the number the more thicker and heavier the gi will be.
Advantages of a thin and light gi?
- Faster drying
- Perfect for warmer summer months
- Less bulk with improved range of motion
Disadvantages of lightweight gi?
- Easier to grab due to its thickness
- Less durable than a thicker gi
Overall the Venum Contender Gi is a great choice for both introductory students and advance alike for both practice and competition at an affordable
price from a reliable and experience brand.
